from my 1981 diary:

Tues. October 13, 1981

Iver and I went with Dennis to a cocktail party, in a modern little apartment near Diamond Heights, with quite a few stylish junkie - type people. It was a going away (go away) for Tom Jones, thrown by Tim B. -- half the time they are friends & half the time they can't stand each other.

It was weird, just a few people, & hardly anyone Tom knew very well. It was boring, too. Lots of food, though.

We told horrible ethnic jokes (What's the longest bridge in the world? The Bay Bridge -- it goes from Fairyland to Africa.) (And others much worse.) Also we did every lightbulb-changing joke we could think of (Polacks, Californians, straight people on Castro St. --both of them--, etc.)

There were these real good things of rolled sliced ham & turkey with a hunk of cheese & asparagus inside, that everyone wolfed down. Also vegetables & dip & fruit salad & lots of liquor. Tim got out a blender & made big bowls of daiquiris, (and people were shooting up heroin in the bedroom.)

Charles Isis was asleep on the couch but woke up & showed off his derringer (unloaded), & Tom fell asleep on the couch.

Iver & Dennis & I & Kim & Tim & Paula & Charles & Tom & this couple with a kid, & some younger punk rock guy were there. That was about it.

Finally we left, & Iver & Dennis & Paula & the young punkish guy - we were going to give him a ride - went down to Dennis' car. We got outside & there was a car with people in it, & it was Teddy & some guys I don't know.

Teddy was Not Invited to the party, (Tom thinks Teddy stole his TV, & Teddy says why would he steal that stupid thing when he has money for a much better one. Later Tom caught whoever actually stole it, some kid I don't know.) but he ran out of gas right there & was wondering whether to go up to use the phone or something when we came out.

We said we'd take him to the gas station, so we drove off in Dennis' car, & Teddy was saying, after we said Tom Jones was asleep, that he'd like to go in & cut his hair, give him a Mohawk, and send the hair to Hong Kong to make a wig. (Tom has long hair & is very vain) & we were all laughing rowdily, & we stopped at a stoplight & the young guy from the party suddenly bolted from the car, saying "thanks-for-the-ride-I-can-get-out-right-here". We sat there stunned a minute & then started laughing, I guess we scared him.

We got back to Teddy's car, & as we drove up, the 3 guys who'd been waiting were staggering around in the street, clutching onto the car. Guess who got dusted. Iver & Teddy were trying to get the car started & the air filter caught on fire & Iver threw it in the street & was stamping on it. Dennis & Paula & I sat in the car watching the whole scene laughing. Paula & I talked about Jon Smith a bit (both being ex-s of sorts of his.) Teddy's car wouldn't start so we went to another gas station & got more gas. This time when we came back the dust bunnies were gone.

The car still wouldn't start, so we left it there, Teddy said he'd call a mechanic in the morning, & came with us to La Rondalla. (Which, back then, was an excellent, cheap, undiscovered Mexican restaurant.)

We talked about Teddy's boyfriend Erik who was in jail in Bangkok at the time, but managed to squeak away from really big trouble and later made it back to SF ok. In the meantime Teddy had a boyfriend for a while who turned out to be a bank robber. Paula said he waved guns around. Teddy said he just wasn't our kind of people, but he said that he did make him realize some things, like that he (Teddy) was suffering from shell shock from Vietnam.

Teddy & Paula told us how Teddy's car is green because he had the paint matched to Jon Flowers sunglasses, & Billy Boop stole the car & scribbled on it with red spray paint & drove it to LA & back before Teddy got it back. At La Rondalla this sleazy drunk woman, probably a hooker, was yelling, "Fucky fucky me!" at the waitresses & causing a commotion, & she went outside & got into a fight with the restaurant owner.

It was a rowdy night. I had a good time, though, as we were all really laughing a lot & telling crazy stories & it was great.
