My Mother's Banana Cake

cream together:
2 cups sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs, beaten

6 ripe bananas, mashed
mix well

add to sugar/bananas mixture:
3 cups flour, unsifted
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
pinch nutmeg
pinch salt

finally, add:
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts (toss in a little of the flour
          from above;
          black walnuts are best)

bake in 2 greased and floured 9-inch cake pans
at 325 degrees F for 50 minutes

frost with chocolate frosting
